An emergency services update: Being in a war

Registered UK Charity 1164793
Official Address: The Limes, 1339 High Road, Whetstone, London N20 9HR
www.MalkiFoundation.org.uk

Malki Foundation UK (registered in the United Kingdom as a charity - number 1164793) invites you to take part in our emergency services update focusing on the families we serve in Israel’s southern border communities.

Thursday, October 26, 2023
Starting at 7:45 pm UK time
Via ZOOM

  • Children with disabilities
  • The families who love them
  • Being in a war

Founded in Israel in 2001, the Malki Foundation undertook the mission of empowering and helping families of children with extreme special needs in concrete ways. In the years since then, more than 3,000 families from Israel’s Christian, Druze, Muslim and Jewish populations have benefited from our programs.

The war that erupted on Shabbat, October 7, 2023, has upended Israel and the region, as well as Israeli families from every part of the socio-demographic spectrum. The work of the Malki Foundation is suddenly more challenging and dramatically more relevant. How we are now intervening to help families in Israel’s periphery, especially the south, is an absorbing narrative we believe you will want to know about.

Via Zoom from London, Geoffrey Hartnell, the chair of Malki Foundation UK’s board of trustees will lead a conversation with two guests in Israel: Arnold Roth, who, with his wife Frimet founded the Malki Foundation and serves as its honorary chair, and Ely Cohen, who directs Malki Foundation’s activities from Jerusalem.

On the agenda:
  • The difficulties the Malki Foundation faces following the horrendous attack on Israel by Hamas
  • The impact on families and children with severe disabilities and the essential therapies we deliver
  • How in these new and difficult conditions we aim to help these families get through the trauma.
You are invited to join the conversation! Click the “I will be attending” button below to reserve your place in this Zoom live event.

If for any reason the "I will be attending" button fails to get you to the sign-up form, please email your contact details to alison@malkifoundation.org.uk

A link to the online Zoom event will be emailed to you once you are registered.

It's scheduled to run for six days starting May 1, 2022 and entails four consecutive days of trekking covering a distance of some 60 km.

Days will start around 7am with breakfast and an 8am departure by coach/bus.

Malki Foundation says "Help save UK Charities"

The Malki Foundation UK (the London-based charity and support organization that provides invaluable backing to the Israel-focused work of the Malki Foundation) along with its partners is proud to be taking part in the National 2.6 Challenge to help save UK Charities.

They are inviting you, your family and friends to take part in the Malki Foundation UK Skip For 26 Challenge on Sunday April 26, 2020, to help to save the UK’s charities.

The Covid-19 pandemic is having a catastrophic effect on UK charities. It's no secret that billions of pounds of vital donation funds have been lost. Charities depend on income from fundraising events and thousands have been cancelled or postponed.

Malki Foundation had teams in the Jerusalem Marathon, in Tough Mudder and in the London Marathon which was to have taken place this coming Sunday 26 April.

London-based Rob Taub, who is the driving force behind Malki Foundation UK, writes that
In response, the UK’s sports event industry has come together to create The 2.6 Challenge, a national fundraising campaign to Save the UK’s Charities. All activities are based around the numbers 2.6 or 26 and are to take place on Sunday 26 April. How can you participate?
Ask for sponsorship to Skip For 26 on Sunday 26th April, examples:
• 26 minutes of skipping
• 26 skips
• 26 seconds of skipping
• 2.6 minutes of skipping
If you can't skip don't worry you can dream up an activity based around the numbers 2.6 or 26 that suits your skills and complete it on Sunday 26 April. Contact Rob to setup your own page.
That's Rob in the YouTube clip below.

Every pound of income generated will go towards saving UK charities. Donations will be held in a central fund and administered by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). Post event, CAF will distribute the central fund based on the ratio of money raised by each participating charity through the combined total income.

Join this worthy effort and Skip for 26

Please share and tag all you do with #skipfor26 @MalkiFoundation and #twopointsixchallenge

In London, Malki Foundation UK co-hosts a great full-house event

[The Jewish Weekly UK, March 17, 2019] A packed house of some 350 guests thronged Mill Hill Synagogue on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 to enjoy an evening of stimulating dialogue.

LBC host Nick Ferrari and Israel’s Ambassador to the UK Mark Regev exchanged erudite views on matters ranging from Corbyn, Brexit, Trump, Hamas and what makes Israel so special. In the ambassador’s words: “It was a pleasure answering questions before so many supporters of the Malki Foundation. By empowering families of Israeli children with severe disabilities, you are supporting the health and happiness of those most in need of it.”

Nick Ferrari revealed that he plans to visit Israel for the first time this coming September.

What a delight”, said Mr Ferrari, “to have the privilege of interviewing Israel’s Ambassador Mark in front of an audience so engaged, informed and involved from the first moment. For me, it was also eye-opening to become aware of what the Malki Foundation is striving to achieve. That such good can come from such unimaginable tragedy is truly life-affirming”.

The successful charitable event resulted from a collaboration between Malki Foundation UK, a charity registered in the UK, and Israel Engagement Programme at Mill Hill United Synagogue. It was one of the best-attended events Mill Hill Synagogue has hosted recently.

All proceeds will go to help advance the non-sectarian work of the Malki Foundation in supporting families in Israel – Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Druze – caring in their home for a child with special needs.

In addressing the audience, Malki Foundation UK’s Chairman of the Board, Geoff Hartnell, said there is currently a waiting list of more than fifty children from every part of Israel society. “Tonight’s event”, he said, “amounts to a very fine kick-start to the charity’s UK Million Shekel Campaign. We look forward to a steadily growing awareness in the UK of our activities in Israel.”

Founded in 2001, the Malki Foundation supports Israeli families who care at home for a child with severe disabilities. It honours the memory of Malka Chana Roth whose life ended at the age of fifteen when she was one of many child victims of a 2001 terror attack in central Jerusalem.

Malki’s parents, Frimet and Arnold Roth, founded the charity with a small group of friends in the weeks after their tragic loss. They remember her as beautiful inside and out and very close to her parents and siblings. Malki was especially attached to the youngest of her sisters, Haya, who suffers from lifelong, complex disabilities.

Arnold Roth, Malki’s father and chairperson of the foundation, spoke to the audience via video from Jerusalem.

All proceeds of the evening are dedicated to the Malki Foundation’s Million Shekel Campaign.

At Malki Foundation UK, we're looking to fill an important position

Fundraising Director
A full-time London-based senior position

Keren Malki – The Malki Foundation is a respected Israel-based charity with offices in Jerusalem. Since 2001, it has uniquely empowered the families of children with severe disabilities from every part of Israeli society, without regard for their religious or political orientation. This empowerment enables those families to keep the children living at home with their families rather than being handed off to institutional care.

The challenges that face a family caring for a child with serious special needs are never simple. Neurological disorders, severe illnesses and childhood development problems change the lives of all parties: the child, the parents, the siblings, even the community among whom the family lives. We know these families need sustained, targeted help to deal successfully with these challenges.

At the Malki Foundation, we believe there are no better advocates and caregivers for a child than his or her parents. Global research also shows that institutional care, as important and indispensable as it can be in certain circumstances, almost always has negative effects on the child and the family. While other Western countries have long understood the detrimental effects of institutionalization, Israel has been resistant to this view and government funding for care in the home and in the community is surprisingly limited.

The Malki Foundation’s support is delivered via three quite unique programs: (1) Equipment Lending; (2) Therapies at Home; and (3) Therapists on Wheels. These allow us to make a substantial difference in how families care for their child with special needs – giving the child the best chance for happiness, better health and overall greater quality of life.

If the Malki Foundation’s services were not available to those families, many of them would have no alternative but to succumb to institutionalization.

Malki Foundation UK is a Foundation Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission as charity number 1164793.

Candidates for this senior position are invited to direct confidential letters of enquiry with a curriculum vita to chair@kerenmalki.org Additional details of the position are available from the same address.

A Tel Aviv gathering helps us get out the word

Partial view of attendees and the snacks
In Tel Aviv earlier this month, a Malki Foundation event in a professional office with one of the Big Orange's most spectacular views provided a great opportunity to share an intimate update on the work we do to benefit Israeli families and their children with special needs.

The Asserson Law Offices in Tel Aviv's Azrieli Center provided the setting for a fascinating gathering with His Excellency, Ambassador Daniel Taub, until recently Israel's chief diplomatic representative in the United Kingdom.

Though the breathtaking late afternoon vista, looking out onto Tel Aviv's high rise skyline and the glittering Mediterranean just beyond it, was a major distraction, Mr Taub's talk kept the invitation-only crowd entranced.

A gifted and charming presenter, Mr Taub did real justice to the intriguing subject line: "Behind the Scenes at the Court of St James: An Outsider's Inside View".

He spoke of how representing Israel at the highest levels of British society, politics and public life provided him with unique opportunities and challenges. He shared some of the ways in which he was able to put emphasis on cross-cultural and interfaith aspects, including teaching Bible and Hebrew study classes in Westminster Abbey and at the Church of England Synod and jointly hosting a Hanukah party with Greece's ambassador to London!

The difficulties and the delicacies of being under great scrutiny as Israel’s representative to the UK made for a captivating talk.

His very well-received presentation was followed by some brief words from Arnold Roth, The Malki Foundation’s co-founder and Honorary Chair, who shared some of the experience of being a parent of a child with severe disabilities and the ways in which Israeli society rises - and often fails to rise - to the challenge. He surveyed some of the ways in which the limitations and shortcomings of health and welfare systems in providing support for children with disabilities can be the source of significant hurdles for such families in every part of Israeli society.

The Malki Foundation plays an increasingly valuable role in helping to address those challenges. Arnold highlighted the way our work has recently been helped via a significant grant from an Israeli government office - the first of more to come, we hope.

Jennifer Shaw Racz of the Malki Foundation's Development Desk
responds to the ambassador's speech.
He also spoke about Malki Chana z”l, his daughter whom he referred to as a special soul who brought light and kindness to the world. The Malki Foundation carries out its important work as a living memorial to Malki's life.

This is a good opportunity to express a public "thank you" for their invaluable contribution to Ambassador Daniel Taub whose presence - despite a forbiddingly busy schedule - graced the event; to Trevor Asserson, Lisa Green, and Nicola Field for their hospitality at Asserson Law; and to the new and veteran Malki Foundation supporters who attended as members of the audience.

To find out about upcoming events at the Malki Foundation, please email us [office (a) kerenmalki.org] so we can add you to our list.

When a "vociferous friend of Israel" encounters a fierce advocate for Israelis with disabilities

Source
We could claim the recent High Holydays season is to blame for the delay.

But whatever the excuse, we apologize for not being quicker to republish some coverage of the recent very successful speaking tour the Malki Foundation organized in the UK with the dynamic and impressive Karine Elharrar, a member of the Israeli parliament (The Knesset) at its centre. [See "London encounters with the truly remarkable Karine Elharrar", September 4, 2016; and "London: Last chance to hear the inspiring Karine Elharrar MK", September 12, 2016].

Ms Elharrar is an outstanding Israeli advocate for the cause of people with disabilities. The nature of her public interest work fits well with the advocacy and values which we at the Malki Foundation want to encourage.

Here's the text of a report published on the website of the Conservative Friends of Israel (UK), datelined September 16, 2016, under the title "CFI Chairman Sir Eric Pickles Joins Israeli MK Karine Elharrar at Malki Foundation "In Conversation" Event in Parliament":
From Ms Elharrar's Facebook page

This week in Parliament, CFI Chairman Sir Eric Pickles joined Israeli MK Karine Elharrar at an “In Conversation” event hosted by the Malki Foundation. Sir Eric spoke with Karine about Israel’s strong ties with the UK as well as discussing the impact of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The MP for Brentwood and Ongar told Karine that he is “proud to be a vociferous friend of Israel”, describing the country as “a bastion of democracy in a region of instability”. He underlined that anti-Semitism is often disguised as anti-Zionism, and said that while perfectly legitimate to criticise the Jewish State, it is not legitimate to deny Israel’s right to exist. Sir Eric emphasised that this desire to single out and delegitimise Israel lies behind BDS and other boycott movements. Prior to entering the Knesset in 2013 as Israel’s first disabled female MK, Karine headed the Legal Clinic at Bar-Ilan University, specialising in the rights of Holocaust survivors, people with disabilities, and pensioners. Amongst numerous political roles she chairs the Knesset State Control Committee. The Malki Foundation is the sole non-profit organisation in Israel supporting parents in order that they may keep their profoundly disabled child at home – rather than put them in a home – by funding key paramedical therapies and provide free-loan assistive equipment. The charity operates across all ethnic and religious communities.
We expect to soon have some additional media coverage of MK Elharrar's recent Malki Foundation UK speaking tour to share with our readers.

London encounters with the truly remarkable Karine Elharrar

MK Elharrar and son [Image Source]
Karine Elharrar is a young woman, a wife, a mother, a lawyer, a social activist and, since 2013, a sitting member of Israel's parliament, the Knesset, on the Yesh Atid party list.

Ms Elharrar, fluent in several languages including English and holding a graduate degree from American University's Washington College of Law in Washington DC, was the head for several years of the Clinical Education program of Bar Ilan University's respected Faculty of Law.

Today, she is regarded as one of this country's outstanding legislators on issues relating to children’s rights, equality of opportunity and the social integration of people with disabilities.

We are proud to say Ms Elharrar will be the guest of the Malki Foundation UK during the week of September 12, 2016, taking the central role in a serious of public and private events in Greater London that encompass synagogues and schools, professional firms and associations, and (yes) the British parliament.

Did we mention that this remarkable person was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of 9? And that her life, her message and her presence in London are bound to be a source of rare and substantial inspiration?

Malki Foundation UK conducts search for “community’s gems”

From the UK Jewish News
From the current edition of Jewish Newsthe UK weekly newspaper:
Awards launched in memory of teenage terror victim
The Malki Foundation Awards is named after 15-year-old Malki Roth, killed in the Sbarro Jerusalem bombing in 2001 | May 19, 2016, 4:19 pm
A charity set up in honour of a Jewish girl killed in a terrorist attack in Israel and inspired by her profoundly disabled younger sister has launched a series of children’s awards recognising acts of kindness, courage and achievement. The Malki Foundation, named after 15-year-old Malki Roth, who was killed in the Sbarro Jerusalem bombing in August 2001, made the announcement this week, to mark the charity’s 15-year anniversary.
Organisers say Malki was a promising young musician and “dedicated to bringing happiness and practical support to children with special-needs,” including her severely disabled younger sister Chaya, now 21, who was the inspiration for setting up the charity in the first place.
“The Malki Foundation Awards will find, honour and celebrate those young people in the UK Jewish community who emulate what Malki stood for, doing something extra in their lives to support and encourage others, to make the world a better place,” said a spokesman.
Click here to go to the Malki
Foundation Awards 2016 site
In its search for “the community’s gems,” the Foundation will look for children who have made a difference to the their community, in different categories such as chesed (recognition of outstanding acts of kindness), courage and achievement, whereby children aged between 10 and 18 years have succeeded “against the odds”.
Additionally, there is a self-entered category of original song, music or poetry, composed by the entrant and submitted digitally via video, photo and/or social media.
The awards are media sponsored by Jewish News
We expect to have more coverage of this very welcome initiative taken by our British friends. Meanwhile, there is much more to see - along with the entry forms and details of the awards themselves - on the new Malki Foundation Awards 2016 website.

Climb every mountain

This photo and caption appeared in the UK Jewish News
We wrote here some weeks ago about the striking success of another (yes, another) mountain-climbing undertaking done by supporters of the Malki Foundation and for its benefit. [See our October 15, 2015 post: Three Peaks Update | The video!]

As families across the United Kingdom settle down to a quiet and warm Sabbath this evening, those who get the Jewish News (UK) will see this fine piece of promotion, congratulating the lovely people who scaled the UK's three tallest peaks in October 2015 - an exhausting and intense experience which produced tangible results for the fine work done here in Israel by the Malki Foundation.

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the UK's three major peaks: Ben Nevis / Beinn Nibheis (1,344 m or 4,409 ft), the highest mountain in Scotland. Scafell Pike (978 m or 3,209 ft), the highest mountain in England. And Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa (1,085 m or 3,560 ft), the highest mountain in Wales. According to Wikipedia, the total distance they walked is estimated at 42 kilometres (26 mi) or 44 km (27 mi) with a total ascent of 9,800 feet (3,000 m).

Once again, we say "Job well done!" to James Harari, Simon Gold, Elaine Gold, Marc Jackson, Scott Sedar, Francesca Harris, Adam James Kramer, Shalom Solomon, Jonathan Schneider. Your success is our success.

Three Peaks Update | The video!

(Video credit: Adam Kramer, one of the climbing "everyday heroes". Many thanks for your fine work and dedication, Adam)

As we wrote here a few days ago, the 2015 (and inaugural) Malki Foundation 3Peaks‬ Challenge - managed and led by Malki Foundation UK director James Harari has come to a successful close. The climbers are back in London, and they have some thoughts to share (listed alphabetically by surname).

Elaine Gold
Was an amazing experience but a once only for me!! Thanks for organising it, James
Simon Gold
Elaine and I had a great time, and are proud to have been part of the trip. Delighted to have put in the effort to help raise money and awareness for the Foundation.
Francesca Harris
Well throughout all the aches, pains and deep heat spray shines a really huge smile. Our team of 9 pushed every limit we know to climb some mountains and raise money for the Malki Foundation. Every time I wanted to give up I thought of the kids. Their smiles. The things they can't do that I can. And so I kept going. I may have raised money for them, but the experience has made me richer than I could have ever imagined.  I wish all at Malki Foundation every success with the wonderful role they play in keeping the kids smiling. You're amazing. Francesca.
Marc Jackson
An incredibly enjoyable experience. I'm still on a high now even though we came down from Snowdon over 8 hours ago! Thanks again.
Adam James Kramer
Being given the chance to do something challenging for a good cause is rewarding. What made the entire trip so much better was the great team who also took part. All I can say is I will be happy to do it again and glad it didn’t rain. What will my next challenge be?
Jonathan Schneider
A really great trip, thank you!
Scott Sedar
Exhausted after 23 hours of hiking and travelling to the base camps, and whilst I looked at the myriad of stars in the clear sky, whilst on the peak of Snowdonia, I thought of the many children my efforts would be helping and the big smiles I would ultimately be contributing too on those children's faces as a result of our combined team effort. It provided me with that last bit of energy I needed to get down!!
Shalom Solomon
So back again next year then :)
The Challenge may have been tackled and done, but it's never too late to show appreciation and support - not only for their selfless and exhausting effort but for the selfless and exhausting efforts made daily by families in Israel - Moslem, Druze, Jewish, Christian, and non-denominational - who make the decision to care for a severely disabled child in the family home rather than hand the child off to institutional care.

To express that support more concretely, please consider making a donation today everydayhero.co.uk/event/malkifoundation-threepeaks

The work of the Malki Foundation is sustained by donations from thousands of ordinary people from many parts of the world. You will be very welcome to join the circle.

Three Peaks Update | Journey's end and home again

Very well done, team!

The 2015 (and inaugural) Malki Foundation 3Peaks‬ Challenge came to a successful close this morning with the return of the climbers to London.

The scaling of the three mountains is over for now. But it's not too late to show appreciation and support - not only for their selfless and exhausting effort but for the selfless and exhausting efforts made daily by families in Israel - Moslem, Druze, Jewish, Christian, and non-denominational - who make the decision to care for a severely disabled child in the family home rather than hand the child off to institutional care.

To express that support more concretely, please consider making a donation today: everydayhero.co.uk/event/malkifoundation-threepeaks
