After a lost wallet was returned to its owner by a stranger

Dear stranger whose name we don't know and who found a lost and fully-loaded wallet and returned it to its owner completely intact a few days ago:

Because of YOU, a dedicated supporter of the Malki Foundation, the owner of the wallet that got lost, "paid it forward" and made a donation to the Malki Foundation to honor your act of kindness and to help women and children which accorded with your request.

Because of YOU, a small, hard-working staff in the Malki Foundation office had the pleasure of being given the praise and motivation they always appreciate by receiving a donation without even asking for one.

Because of YOU, a child with disabilities will receive additional therapies which will help her learn to eat, crawl, communicate and even walk.

Because of YOU, a parent will breathe a little easier tonight knowing she is able to watch her child sleep in his bed at home and provide him with the therapy he needs to succeed.

From all of us, wherever you are: thank YOU. YOU have made a difference.

As we draw near to the Day of Atonement

2017 annual report

The High Holydays period in Jewish tradition reaches its dramatic high point on Yom Kippur, starting this Friday evening.

We're accustomed to think of it as a time for fasting. But in our people's sacred texts it's called a time to practice self-denial, something we rarely do at other times.

Thoughtful commentators have helped us understand that we take on the not-eating, the not-drinking, the other self-imposed hardships of this very special day for practical reasons: to help us enter into a self-searching frame of mind and to achieve personal dialogue with the Master of the Universe.

Looking honestly within ourselves is never easy. It involves thinking not only about actions but about ethics and spiritual ideas: Am I living up to my own values? Am I the person I wanted to be? Is the world, is my community, is my family better because of me?

The Malki Foundation's work is intended to change people's lives for the better. With all due modesty, we feel that we do that - though not enough, of course.

If you are reading this letter, you probably know already that we devote our energies and resources to providing concrete, measurable help to people who get far too little of it: families caring at home for a child with serious disabilities. No other organization in Israel does the things we do.

During these Ten Days of Penitence, when acts of charity are especially respected, please consider making a donation to the Malki Foundation.  You will be assisting families grappling with some of life's major challenges. Secure, online donations can be made by clicking here.

This is also the time of year we send out our annual print newsletter. If you have not yet received your copy, click below to read it now - online.

There's one brand-new development that does not appear there:  The Malki Foundation Australia Ltd is now endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) from September 1, 2017. That's great news. Details to follow.

With sincere wishes for a better new year for all, and warm thanks to all of you who have made such a positive difference by your contributions to the indispensable work of the Malki Foundation.

A moment of your attention

During this season of giving, give a child the chance to reach his or her full potential. Please help us give families from every part of Israeli society the chance to care for their child with severe disabilities at home.

When you donate to Keren Malki, your money goes to pay for therapies that help children with special needs crawl, walk, talk, eat on their own, move independently around their homes and schools, and most importantly, stay at home with their families.

You can help children like Noa, Netanel, and Ahuva who have all learned to walk as a result of Keren Malki's programs (read their stories by clicking on their names).

Many of you have supported us in the past, and for that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Because of you, this year, we have already provided more than 1,500 therapy sessions to some 95 children and loaned out more than 2,600 pieces of assistive equipment to children and families in need of them. But as word continues to spread about our services, our waiting list - an ever-present reality - continues to grow.

We currently have over 120 children on our waiting list for our Therapies at Home program alone. Our end of the year goal is to accept 12 new children into that program. To do this, we need to raise $20,000. We can only do that with the support of backers and donors, and we hope you will be among them.

What your tax deductible donation can provide:
•          $36 - One hydrotherapy session to improve muscle tone
•          $180 - Three speech therapy sessions to help a child with special needs start to speak
•          $250 - A month of expert-supervised, in-the-home paramedical therapy sessions for a child living in one of Israel's periphery communities
•          $1,000 - A walking- or standing-frame unit to add to our in-demand inventory of home equipment loaned to families of a child unable to stand alone

Please help us improve the quality of life of children with disabilities and their families by making a tax-deductible donation before the end of the year. Donations to the Malki Foundation can also make excellent holiday gifts. There are special tribute cards available on our website. And if you have any ideas to share or questions to ask, please be in touch with Debbie Fishman at the foundation's offices in Jerusalem.
